Industrial Hemp Licensing and Acreage Statistics

The industrial hemp licensing and acreage statistics are produced annually by the Office of Controlled Substances (OCS) to provide stakeholders and other interested parties with information on the number of commercial licences issued, and acreages by variety and province approved under the Industrial Hemp Regulations.

NOTE: A licence is issued to a specific site where more than one regulated activities may be conducted, and a licence holder may be granted licences for multiple activities at multiple sites.

NOTE:

The Industrial Hemp Regulations (IHR) to the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) defines hemp as cannabis containing no more than 0.3% delta‐9‐tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive compound in the leaves and flowering heads of the growing plant. A licence is required to possess, produce (cultivate), sell/provide, import and/or export industrial hemp.  The IHR permits the cultivation of industrial hemp for the seed, grain and/or fibre only.

In accordance with section 14 of the IHR, a person licensed to cultivate industrial hemp, other than a plant breeder, must use an approved variety as listed under Health Canada's List of Approved Cultivars for the Current Growing Season.
