Electromagnetic spectrum displayed left to right by higher frequency, shorter wavelength to lower frequency, longer wave length. From left to right higher frequency examples are Cosmic radiation gamma radiation and X-rays (these are forms of ionising radiation); next moving toward lower frequency examples from left to right, ultraviolet radiation, visible light, infrared radiation, microwaves and radio waves (these are forms of non-ionising radiation). Pictorial examples of the types of electromagnetic spectrum are:

  • Cosmic - radiation from Outer Space
  • Gamma radiation - Nuclear Medicine treatment
  • X-ray - medical X-ray
  • Ultraviolet - radiation from the Sun
  • Visible light - a Rainbow
  • Infrared - radiant heater
  • Micro Waves - a micro wave oven
  • Radio waves - a radio broadcast
